1
ARRIVAL AT JOHANNESBURG or CAPE TOWN INTERNATIONAL.
Those of us who arrive at Johannesburg will re connect with
the flight to Cape Town. We will be met at Cape Town
International Airport by our personal guide / driver and transferred
to Winchester Mansions a stylish four star boutique hotel in
the shadow of Table Mountain and overlooking the sea within easy reach of many of the Mother City’s
scenic and historic attractions. The Internationally
famous Hop On-Hop Off Topless Red Bus service stops right out
side the front door of your hotel. |
|
The
Hotel has earned a fine reputation for friendly hospitality
and outstanding service. We can spend the rest of the
afternoon acclimatising at your leisure and soaking up the
atmosphere of this most beautiful of cities before Dinner.
Hang gliders from signal hill land on the lawns in front of
the Hotel. Across the lawns you can rest against the Sea Wall
and be mesmerised by the power of the waves as they crash
against the rocky breakwater, with Table Mountain rising above
your hotel in the back ground. The Hotel offers a
complimentary dinner shuttle service to most nearby
restaurants in Cape Town, and of course the famous V&A
Waterfront form savoury delights and lots of retail therapy.

CAPE TOWN.
After breakfast we’ll take the ultra-modern
Revolving Cable Car
to the peak of Cape Town’s world-renowned icon - Table Mountain,
subject the weather conditions, rising
1045m (3000 feet) above the city. This world heritage
site with its staggering numbers of plant & animal species
offers amazing photographic opportunities and views that stretch
to the far horizons. |
|

Then it’s off to the Cape Point Nature Reserve, the
romantic meeting place of the Indian and Atlantic oceans in
what Sir Frances Drake called
'The fairest Cape that we saw in the whole circumference of
the globe’. Then in the picturesque naval base of Simon’s
Town we can sit among the African Penguins at Boulders Beach
in one of the few land-based penguin colonies in the world.
Back at the hotel we can reminisce about the day’s activities
over a quiet drink in the bar before tucking into a great meal in the famous Butcher’s Grill Room.

Day
3
OUDTSHOORN.
On leaving
Cape Town
behind, we’ll stay off the beaten track as we take Route 62,
the world’s longest wine route, through to Oudtshoorn.
This is a region of magnificent landscapes and towering cliffs,
crystal clear streams and an abundance of trees and indigenous
flora. Along the way we’ll stop for lunch (at
own expense) in Barrydale. In Oudtshoorn we’ll book
into the skilfully renovated
Queens Hotel where the
British Royal Family sojourned on their 1948 tour of the country.
Later we’ll gather in the cosy wood-panelled pub for fortifications
before trying the fine traditional South African fare in the
renowned Colony Restaurant.
Overnight at the Queen’s Hotel. (B, D)

KNYSNA. Today
we’ll leave the Klein Karoo behind and head back over the
mountains and descend the
Robinsons
Pass to the sun-washed town of Mossel Bay. This small
harbour town, first discovered by Bartholomew Dias back in
1488, boasts a wonderful temperate climate, miles of golden
beaches and a rich cultural history. On our short
stop here we discover some of South
Africa’s early history at the Vasco da Gama museum where a
full size replica of his caravel ship is housed and we’ll
also learn the legend behind "The Old Post Office Tree".
After lunch we’ll head east along the soft rolling hills of
the Garden Route to Knysna which was voted South Africa’s
favourite little town for several years running and famous
for its oysters, elusive seahorses and the beautiful Knysna Loerie (Tucan). Nestled between the majestic Outeniqua
Mountains and the warm Indian Ocean and surrounded by protected
forests it is easy to see why Knysna is a firm favourite with
foreign and local visitors alike. We’ll get to know
some of the local landmarks on a tour of the town before checking
into The Graywood Hotel, conveniently situated close to the
Waterfront and the centre of town. The charming hotel
is decorated in the spirit of the surrounding forests with
beautiful woodwork throughout and lush landscaped gardens
where we can meet to catch up on the day’s events over a sun
downer before dining at the Blue Goose Restaurant. Overnight
at the Graywood Hotel. (B, D) |

nature lover. After enjoying a fabulous buffet lunch
at the Featherbed Restaurant overlooking the lagoon we’ll
head back to the Waterfront and have a much deserved afternoon
of leisure which can be spent relaxing at the hotel or exploring
some of the quaint shops or Knysna’s many art galleries.

ZUURBERG.
We’ll leave behind the lush and unspoilt beauty of the forest
and head for the ‘top of the world’ the idyllically
situated elegant Zuurberg Hotel, originally a relay station
for the horse draw coaches of yesteryear, high up in the Zuurberg
Mountains overlooking the Addo Elephant Park north of Port
Elizabeth. We’ll have lunch at the hotel and then set
off to the Addo Elephant Park in a four by four safari vehicle.
Tucked away in the dense valley-bushveld, Addo provides sanctuary
to vast herds of elephant as well as lion, leopard, buffalo,
black rhino, several species of antelope, hyena and numerous
bird species. We’ll try our luck at spotting Africa’s
elusive and often neglected ‘Little Five’ the
Rhinoceros Beetle, the Leopard Tortoise, the Elephant Shrew,
the Ant Lion and the Buffalo Weaver! As the animals
make their leisurely way down to the watering holes we’ll
stop for a drink before making our way back up the mountain
in time to freshen up before a relaxing dinner.

ZUURBERG.
Today we have a truly remarkable treat in store - the ultimate
elephant experience which includes a half hour elephant-back
ride and a one hour guided walking trail following the gentle
giants through their natural habitat going past the waterhole
where they may be tempted to swim. Back at the reception
area we’ll even have the opportunity of feeding the elephants
with their favourite pellets. We’ll be back at the hotel
in time for a late lunch and then have the afternoon at leisure
to enjoy a game of tennis or a hike or just laze around the
pool & enjoy the fresh mountain air. Tonight we
can relax and reminisce over a sun downer around a log fire
before enjoying our last delicious dinner together.
