South African Garden Route Tour Itinerary |
|
 |
Day 1 - Stellenbosch
On arrival at Cape Town
airport you
collect your vehicle from our airport depot and depart immediately for
beautiful wine making region of South Africa. Stellenbosch is only a mere
30km from the airport and therefore makes it the perfect area to spend you
first night.
This is South
Africa’s second oldest town, founded in 1679 and named in honour of Simon
van der Stel, the early Cape governor, and although the first white settlers
grew wheat, they soon turned to the making of wine and, today, vineyards
cover the surrounding hillsides.
Accommodation
-
The wine farm where you will be staying was first settled in 1694. Several
owners gradually tamed the wild fertile valley and in 1901 the first 'Van
Niekerk' bought the farm. Now, four generations later, the Van Niekerk's
are producing award winning wines and offer traditional Cape Hospitality at
the guest house. Originally a clay and stone structure housing stables, a
blacksmith room and coach house, the guest house offers modern comfort with
old-world charm. Wake up to bird calls and farmyard bustle and let them
spoil you with a traditional Cape breakfast. Relax at the pool sipping
crisp white wines whilst looking over the amazing winelands.
Board basis Bed and
Breakfast.

|
Day 2 - Oudtshoorn
Today you head for the
drier areas of the “Klein Karoo” On leaving Stellenbosch, enjoy the
unexpected pleasures of 'Route 62', the longest wine route in the world, as
you meander your way to Oudtshoorn through the Small Karoo, Winelands and
the Breede River Valley. Oudtshoorn is known as the “Feather capital of
South Africa” and is famous for its ostrich farms and
guided tours, the magnificent subterranean
Cango Caves and is one of the top ten tourist destinations in South Africa.
The Cango Caves Wildlife ranch is well worth a visit and is one of the few
successful conservation programmes breeding Bengal Tigers, White Lions and
Cheetahs. Visitors can interact face to face with these animals and play
with their cubs (when available).
Accommodation –
Your guest house
offers comfortable
home-away-from-home accommodation with a cosy ambiance, and a perfect
setting within the hub of Oudtshoorn, but with the sensation of tranquil
surroundings in the countryside. The emphasis on comfort and service ensures
it to be a memorable place to stay. Two separate outdoor barbeque
facilities offer guests the opportunity to soak up the African sun or take
refuge under the lapa whilst enjoying the peaceful atmosphere. After a long
day of sight seeing guests can drown the heat in the sparkling swimming
pool. Board basis Bed and Breakfast. |

Day 3 - Tsitsikamma
Today
you head south towards the coast and the town of Tsitsikamma descending the
spectacular Outeniqua Pass, dropping 721m (2162 feet) in just 8km (5
miles). Have the cameras ready at the top before you descend for some
outstanding views of the sea and the
town of George in the distance. George is a main centre which you pass
through before turning east again through the Garden Route to Tsitsikamma
Forest.
En route, just past Plettenberg Bay, you may choose to stop at Monkeyland,
Birds of Eden (biggest free flying aviary) and even watch the highest bungy
jump in the world. View our
things to do page
Tsitsikamma, 'the place of much water' - a place of mystery
and long forgotten tales. This is a combined marine and forest park with its own
natural beauty, one of the wonderlands of South Africa, with indigenous
forests and giant yellow wood trees, waterfalls, lakes, mountains and rivers
set on the foaming breakwaters of the Indian Ocean. The park is rich in animal and bird life which
never ceases to stun visitors to the Tsitsikamma Forest.
Accommodation
-
Here you
will stay in a beautiful timber cottage overlooking the ocean and can enjoy
your meals in the a la carte restaurant. There are also many activities on
offer from hiking trails, canoeing, bird watching, abseiling, swimming and
beach access. The latest adventure in the area is their 'Canopy Tours'
where you travel through the forest 30metres above the forest floor, gliding
on a steel cable from platform to platform. This journey of a lifetime last
for about three hours and is truly unforgettable. Safety is paramount and
the system has been built to the highest civil engineering standards with
state of the art equipment and fully trained professional guides. Bookings
for this have to be made well in advance, so please let us know if you are
tempted.

Day 6 & 7
- Knysna
Today you
turn west and head back towards
Cape Town.
Set on the
banks of the Knysna estuary, gateway to the limpid and lovely Knysna lagoon,
heart of the Knysna National Lake Area and jewel of the garden route. The
town was once an important small lagoon harbour that served the timber trade.
Ships would pass, at their peril, through the magnificent Heads, two massive
sandstone cliffs that loom like sentinels over the estuary. Today Knysna is
a thriving centre of the tourist industry; its hub is perhaps the exclusive
Knysna Quays Waterfront complex which has replaced the old working harbour.
Knysna is renowned for their delicious oysters celebrated annually at the
Oyster Festival in July. Various cruises and dinner cruises are
available on the lagoon.
Accommodation
-
In Knysna you will be staying in an attractive Cape Cod style guest house on
the Old Cape Road, the original road from Knysna to Cape Town, here you will
experience spectacular views over the Knysna Lagoon to the heads and out
onto the big blue sea. Your hosts warmly welcome you and ensure an
enjoyable stay in Selftours home town, Knysna.
Board basis Bed and
Breakfast.

majestic and often moody heights of Table Mountain,
the flat-topped massif that served as an unmistakable landmark and symbol of
refuge for generations of seafarers. Today, the metropolis ranks as one of
the southern hemisphere's premier leisure destinations, known for the beauty
of its surrounds, its historic buildings, its lively Cape
Town waterfront and harbour,
its theatres, restaurants and nightspots, and for the inviting wine routes
of a hinterland that has its own myriad charms. Discover the delights of
Cape Town - cable car and hiking trails up Table Mountain - boat trips
around the harbour and to Robben Island - 50km north to the wine route - the
Cape Peninsular nature reserve - the Castle and famous
Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens - Parliament and the Company Gardens - a
