had a bungalow just above the beach with our own private beach
area in front as well a lovely view of the sea and sunsets.
The setting couldn't have been better. The bungalows
are comfortable, and nice and roomy. The hotel area etc is
very nice and clean with a beautiful pool. The owners
and staff were very helpful and pleasant, and really tried
to make us happy. Monique and her family all spoke English,
and the manager in charge of the restaurant as well - so the
language was not much of a problem. They organised a
sumptuous seafood feast for my husbands birthday dinner, on
our patio at our bungalow at no extra charge plus they made
him a birthday cake - it was very special.
organised the 4 trips we went on, plus an english speaking
guide when we needed one.
Nothing was a problem for them to help to make our stay very
enjoyable. The hotel is not situated in the busy area
of Nosy Be which is why I chose it. There were no hawkers
bugging you when you walked on the beach. I was also
happy with Air Madagascar - although their planes are old
they still are in reasonable condition and we had no problems
mechanically, although they did leave an hour later from Jhb
and also from Antananarivo when we came back.

Lynne Stevens report
to us & her friends about their
MADAGASCAR holiday on Sainte Marie
Subject: Madagascar : "A Whale of a Tale"
Dear Friends, Family & Colleagues
hit the floor running on my return to the office, and have
almost forgotten that I even had a holiday !
But allow me make you envious with my tale of Madagascar !
Marie Island is a small island (50km long, 6km wide) off the
coast of mainland Madagascar. We
were collected from the airport in an ox-wagon .. so quaint
..and greeted at the hotel with an iced drink, and iced facecloths.....for
the long journey from the airport.....about 800m !
lodge comprises of 22 bungalows, all thatched with banana
leaves and wooden shutters, no glassed windows.... The
sea breeze at night was delightful, with the wind rustling
in the leaves, the stars and the moon......! In true Stevens’
Spirit we attacked the islands’ pleasures with gusto !
hired a scooter and set off to discover the little village.
All dirt roads of course, with deep drainage
ditches on each side ! Being a French Island, driving on the
right hand side of the road was a bit of a challenge – avoiding
the ditches was also a challenge ! Constant admonishments
to Bruce to mind the ditches fell on deaf ears! Need I say
more.... ? I can still hear
the peals of laughter from the locals, as we careened off
the road and landed in the ditch -with the scooter on top
of us !!
Malagasy History tells the story of Princesse Bora
who rescued Captain William Kidd, an
infamous pirate, from drowning, so besides his
grave to visit , there is a tavern named after him.
local beer is named “Three Horses Beer ” or THB ...and
with 6.5% alcohol, it also kicked like a mule ! Naturally,
we had to sample the local brew to calm our nerves after falling
off the scooter !
Luckily we didn’t need our pathetic attempts at the
French language to enable us to order the beers
! During our rest, I had a rather uneasy feeling
that I was being watched – and indeed I was !
– by a 40cm chameleon – black, white and grey – (concrete
colour) Now, even I can out-run a chameleon
, with its ‘ parrot like feet and swaying
gait- but it did out stare me with its ‘ separate
mobile eyes ! After my initial flight, I was encouraged
to touch it – by then of course, I needed another THB – to
fortify my nerves, you understand !
following day it was off to Ile Aux Nattes ( Island of Nuts)...only
about 100m from Ile Sainte Marie, and easily swimmable
at low tide ! . (Madagascar is famous for its
cashew nuts yum ! yum ! This little island is only 7km in
circumference, so we set off to walk around the whole island,
and to stop and snorkel en route ! Now
Bruce, Ian & Thea are almost 6 feet tall –so when
they were wading shin deep, I was already waist-deep, and
no-one considered the incoming tide !! Here we found
the most delightful little pre-primary school fenced with
poles painted as coloured crayons ! The school bus is a skiff,
that is poled along in the warm shallow waters ! How
my heart ached to stay and watch those little ones at their
lessons and play !
lighthouse is at the highest point, and it was
also at this point , that I fell down
the mountain – Bruce’s fault, as he had left
the beaten track (his idea of a shortcut )and encouraged the
party to thrash through the undergrowth ! Did you
also know that Madagascar is famous for its snake
population ? A few more THBs were needed here too !
Ile Aux Nattes we discovered a small restaurant, La Petite
Traversee “ A small journey” run by an Afrikaans chap, ex
Benoni who came to Madagascar 7 years ago....and never left
! How I envied him !
Imagine our delight in discovering ring-tailed lemurs in his
garden ! These adorable little creatures had to be coaxed
down from the trees with a banana, but then curled up and
cuddled with us for a scratch on their heads and tummies !
Lemur comes from a Latin word meaning ghost or spirit, and
truly with their ghostly cries and reflective eyes, they could
was enchanted with their liquid, golden eyes and was so surprised
to feel that their coats were soft like a rabbit ‘s,
but they have wet noses like a dog ! They also have long,
flat ,silky, ribbon-like tongues...to suck nectar and insects
out of flowers. These creatures are truly adorable ! There
are also about 30 odd species ranging in size from a mouse
to a fox !
following day we hopped on board a 4m motor-boat to visit
“Coco Bay” a little alcove, to snorkel
and enjoy a seafood barbeque on the beach . Imagine our delight,
when we spotted a Humpback whale.....a 15 metre male! Humpback
whales calve here in Sainte Marie and stay for 3 months, before
moving onto to The Antarctic, so we were thrilled to see this
late-leaver ! (typical male) He cavorted,
and breached and slapped his fluke (tail) and swam within
15 metres of us, and although my heart was in my mouth by
the sheer enormity of his size, I was totally in awe of this
magnificent creature !
felt like I had been communing with God ! 7 people on
the boat were absolutely silent for more than an hour while
we bobbed next to this magnificent giant. I was rather tearful
when he gave a grunt (like hippo) and with a final spectacular
flip of his tail, he finally decided to swim on.
Princesse Bora Lodge is home to Maria, a
Marine Biologist from Caracas who encourages the tourists
to join her daily expeditions on the whale-ship to record
data such as flukes, fins, grunts, whale songs, sounds
etc which are unique to each individual whale. This data
is then fed into a world data-bank for scientific purposes
! She was horrified that we had got so close to it
! Did we know that it probably weighed about
36 000 kg ?....and we were in a 4m boat ? And did we
know that the approach distance to a whale is at least 100m?
No, we didn’t, but we couldn’t exactly stop a 15m whale
from being curious about us now, could we ?
Needless to say, another few THBs were needed to calm
our nerves, and to celebrate this most precious moment.
Did you know that whales and porpoises are from the same
family ? I didn’t either – I thought that a porpoise and
a dolphin were alike !
did I leave only my footprints on Ile Sainte Marie ?
No, I definitely left a piece of my heart !

Hotel transfers were punctual and friendly and the vehicles

our needs to the best of their abilities and when we requested
extra time in the Tana markets or a bit of an extra sight-see,

driver from IC Tours, Fabian, was wonderful. His driving

Private Park Tour made a very good journey-breaker and the
friendly staff took us on a tour of large enclosed areas
full of chameleons and the most amazing butterflies. We
also had our first encounters with lemurs here.
our way to Andasibe, Fabian stopped at a market in a village

is difficult to say which of the two islands we enjoyed more,
they were so very different it is impossible to compare. The
staff and owners at both were extremely friendly, helpful
Aux Nattes, St Marie was more rustic but far from basic, meals
were 5 star and the accommodation just a few steps from the
sea. The two resident lemurs defiantly rate amongst my highlights,
there was also a pet rabbit named Bert. The dive operation
is run from the main island but arrived to fetch us each day,
the only down side is that there was no where to rinse
our kit or hang it up after the days diving.
Sakatia is more established, our unit was set amongst the
trees away from the beach. At night a family of lemurs would
make their way across our roof into the hills and return the
same way in the early morning to head back into the forest,
talking to themselves all the way, again a highlight! The
dive centre is very organised, the staff very helpful. We
were the only two diving during our week so were made to feel very
special, diving on sites rarely explored.
general impression of the diving in Madagascar is WOW!!
We did 16 dives in 7 days! The reefs are totally unspoilt,
abundant fish life and variety we have seldom experienced.
The sea conditions were warm and calm, sometimes it felt like
a huge swimming pool. Paola is now a new convert to night
diving which has never appealed to her before Madagascar!
can strongly recommend our trip to anyone wanting to do a
diving holiday, it was the right decision to do both islands
but next time would probably do only one as the internal
travelling is long and tedious, wasting most of the day.

about his MADAGASCAR
got back from Madagascar after a very successful and enjoyable
holiday marred only by a tummy bug which we’ve put down
to the Malanil Malaria tablets we were all taking.
went extremely smoothly with no hitches. Amarina was
just magic. We had 3 adjoining rooms each with our
own small patio about 15 meters from the beach. We
all sat on 1 patio each evening with a drink from the bar
fridge watching the sunset which every night never failed
to impress. Absolutely out of this world. I
have never seen such magnificent sunsets. We also
made use of the fabulous beach bar on occasion. The staff
at Amarina are warm and friendly and the service top class.
You drop a fork, bend down to pick it up and there’s a waiter
at your elbow with a new one. They all speak French,
their English is sketchy and our French was sketchy so we
had many a good giggle trying to communicate. The
food according to my “we’ll eat anything” family was superb.
They also served duck and on one particular night, frogs
legs which a couple of the family members tried and said
made full use of our days at Amarina. Our second day
we did their 3 island tour of Nosy Komba (to visit the lemurs),
Nosy Tanikely for snorkelling ending up on Nosy Sakatia
for an unforgettable lunch BBQ (absolutely delicious) on
the beach. The lemurs are gorgeously ugly and meeting
them was so much fun. They call them “Maki, Maki,
Maki” and through the trees, these furry long tailed bundles
come bouncing, jumping onto your shoulder if you have a
bit of banana in your hand. We had a wonderful guide
Jullen, for the day. 88 Euros and worth every
between excursions we snorkelled right off the beach at
Amarina at low tide. The reef is about 100m off the
beach so you can walk on the exposed rock (aqua shoes a
necessity) or wade across and enjoy the beautiful coral,
amazing fishies and some really fat starfish! The
pool at Amarina was great but at 34 degrees, definitely
left Madagascar feeling that we had really seen Nosy Be.

company on the holiday in Zanzibar. The accommodation were
excellent and the staff very helpful and friendly. Transfers
were on time and the drivers were very safety conscious
and answered all questions on anything on the route. The
guides on the tours (stone town, prison island, spice tour
etc) were excellent and really knows the history and their
subject – Adam that took us on the Stone Town and Prisoner
Island tours is an asset to any company.
Thanks again for a great

Last year I planned an island holiday but was not really sure
where to go, I bumped into your website and landed on the
lap of Carina, she was so enthusiastic, I had no option to
go with her ideas MADAGASCAR was the destination.
I later lost
interest as out of the blue I was involved in a divorce and
had no further interest in the holiday, now already paid for.
Everything that could go wrong, did go wrong, a divorce, the
flight from JHB delayed for 24 hours you name it.
Carina kept things
going and my spirit up, she convinced me to do the island
thing. In Johannesburg I was the only passenger on that doomed
flight who had contact with my travel agent that evening,
stranded in Johannesburg and all the other passengers looked
at me. Carina gave me her cell phone number and we were in
communication all evening until the matter was resolved and
all the passengers put up in a hotel in Johannesburg. I am
back home with very good memories and excellent photographs.
Carina kept things
going, we all enjoyed a fabulous holiday and to cap it all,
Carina even arranged for a refund from African Encounters
for all our wasted costs as result of the delayed flight.
Carina is tops
and there is no reason why I or anyone else should seek assistance
anywhere else that at Selftours cc.
All the compliments to Carina and Selftours cc.

I just thought
that you might be interested to hear how it all went. Generally
speaking this was a wonderful experience for us, we liked
the hotels and Madagascar a lot. The arrangements were ok.
Overall, this was a very good trip and we did enjoy the holiday
a lot. I have given your details to some of our friends here
in Malawi, who will be travelling to Madagascar later this
year - so, hopefully they will contact you and make a booking.
you for all the arrangements,

New Year! Hope you had a wonderful Christmas and wish
you all the best for 2008.
of all, sorry it's taken me a while to get back to you -
as you know we arrived back on the 29th to Joburg but we
only got back to Zimbabwe yesterday evening as we took a
slow drive back, stopping over in Pietersburg to stock up!
that we're back safe and sound and have had time to unpack
our bags - all that remains is to thank you very
much for organising the PERFECT holiday for us!
Everything went like clock work, no delays, no problems at
all and the hotels that you chose for us were just great.
Of course Relias des Plateaux, perfect because it was so close
to the airport, so very easy for all of us. Next day,
as we approached the island and looked out the window - we
knew we were landing in paradise! So beautiful - couldn't
wait to get to Vani Vola and unpack! Vani Vola was
another perfect choice for us - great family hotel
and the hosts Fabienne and Jacques did everything they could
to make us feel at home. We spent the day
with them visiting Ile aux Nattes for exploring the island,
lunch and snorkelling on one of the days and got to know
them a little better than just manager/client, that broke
the ice for the rest of the trip. On other days we
rented quads/bikes and did a tour of the island (the roads
are terrible!) but we managed. Spent the day
at La Crique relaxing, snorkelling and the boys went biking
again. Christmas was celebrated the French way
on the eve of 24th with a delicious celebration dinner
and all the trimings (unfortunately 2 of us in the party
were not well so couldn't enjoy the feast) but by the next
day we were over our woes and ready for more celebrations!
Again, Fabienne went out of her way to make it special
for the kids with presents under the tree - they loved it!
It really was a holiday to remember and just what we all
needed to re-charge our batteries.
once again, special thanks to you Cheryl and the rest
of the Selftours team - I'll be singing your praises
all over Zimbabwe for sure!!

I am back (urgh!), but thought I would drop you a line and
let you know how our holiday was...
First of all, Madagascar is an amazing country. I fell
in love with it straight away. The people are awesome,
and even though their English is very limited, they were more
than accommodating - drawing pictures in the sand etc. etc.
Nosy Be Hotel was lovely. It was quaint and beautiful and
the staff were out of this world. Not too much of a
great beach and I saw this was the case with most hotels on
Nosy Be, but the excursions were definitely worth it. We managed
to swim with turtles and most importantly, I saw my lemurs
who promptly jumped all over me. I will send you the photos
as soon as I have loaded them. The food they put out on the
excursions is also out of this world! We had a variety of
crab, barracuda, zebu meat, some fabulous potato dish that
just took my breath away and all sorts of other things.
Our last night in Tana was also lovely. The Relaix De Plateaux
is a wonderful hotel and we were happy to part with our last
Ariary to a waiter called Hery who was just fantastic.
I just want to thank you for everything you organised - it
all went ever so smooth. I will not hesitate to recommend
you to my friends and clients and will definitely use you
again on our next adventure (not sure where to??????!!!!).
I wish you many blessings for the New Year! Thanks again!

Wow – what an awesome holiday. Thanks again for all
your efforts in making it such a special trip. The hotels
where we stayed were really beautiful and we would definitely
recommend these to others as well as recommend the services
of Selftours. All the hotel staff were incredibly friendly
and tried their best to communicate with us in English.
We eventually arrived at the Pallisandre at about 12:30am on
Sunday morning. The Pallisandre hotel is very elegant and the
room was lovely.
Onwards to beautiful Sainte Marie. Richard and I think that
Moasoandro was definitely the best choice for staying on the
island – its far away from the touristy part of the island
and really afforded us the rest and relaxation we were craving.
The staff were incredibly friendly, the rooms rustic and wonderfully
close to the beach and the beach was…heaven. Highlights for
us included seeing and hearing the whales, snorkelling the
coral reef, sipping cocktails at sunset and getting a very
sore butt travelling the islands bumpy roads by motorbike.
The food was quite good – just breakfast could have been a
bit more adventurous – we gave the hotel the feedback that
some fruit with breakfast would make the difference.
we arrived back in Tana on Thursday afternoon we were greeted
by the friendly face of Tu (not sure how to spell his name)
who took us straight through to the brand new Nissan Patrol
driven by Sisi. After a four hour trip we arrived at Vakona
Lodge after dark. Once again a beautiful hotel with very comfortable
rooms awaited us.
The next day Tu and Sisi collected us again and took us to
the Perinet reserve – we spent about four hours haring around
the forest lead by our hugely enthusiastic and expert guide,
Zaka. He helped us to find four species of lemur, including
a super close up of some bamboo lemurs. We were also entertained
by the Indri cries, saw plenty amazing birds and even 3 snakes!
After lunch and an afternoon rest we were taken to lemur island
where we had an absolute ball feeding and playing with the
lemurs. Then off to the Vakona reserve before heading off
for our nocturnal walk with Zaka. Although we did not see
any nocturnal lemurs we saw frogs, geckos and chameleons –
just by walking along the road!
We were really sad to say
goodbye after such a short visit and headed back to Tana on
Saturday morning. After a short stop at the artisans market
it was off to the airport and home. Tu was incredibly attentive
and went out of his way to make the last part of our holiday
On the whole the trip
was really well organised – we hope to get the chance to utilize
your services in the future.
Thanks again for all your assistance and take care.

than being bitten by a lemur and having to find a local

Be hotel was great, especially the food!
We did find that the excursions were quite pricey (paid
in Euro of course) for what one got. It was great having
the full meal package, but we missed most of the lunches
because of excursions where often lunch was included. I
am not sure whether it would have been better to pay separately
for the 2 or 3 lunches we had at the Hotel? Main course
was about R100,00 and starter and dessert R60,00 each.

comfortable accommodations (except for 10C cabin in morning).
We loved the Tana hotel - wanted 2 more nights there to explore
Tana a bit and do some craft shopping. Vanila Hotel was incredible
- unit #24 was on the end toward the ocean and like a private
house near the beach. We had had enough of islands sailing around
the Seychelles so we did not take any of the tours. The published
taxi rates were great and we took one for a day for 70,000 ariary

Tours is regarding car hire. We will definitely use your
service again whenever we come back to S.A
If you recall, we arranged car
hire for our July holiday at Jan Smuts airport and delivery
back to Randburg.
We collected the car from Jan Smuts airport as arranged, the
process took only a few minutes because of pre-payment and
we were on our way. The car was even upgraded to a larger
car free, when we requested an extension of an additional
two days hire this was done so fast and efficiently.
Returning the car at Jan Smut airport instead of Randburg
as previously arranged was an absolute pleasure as the speed
of handling the return car was so fast and brilliantly handled,
less than one minute to complete formalities.......very impressive.
In all, both my wife and I were
so impressed with how this car hire was handled from beginning
to end that we cannot imagine hiring a car in future from
anyone else but Self Tours. Well done on an exceptional service.
