Is Knysna the best holiday destination in South Africa?
Knysna – Heart of the Garden Route
In October 2012, 8 Million people took part in the “Best in the World” reader survey which brought Knysna to second position of the CN Travel World’s Best Cities list. What makes this town so unique you might wonder? The fact that, not only does it nestle on the banks of an estuary; it is situated in the heart of the Garden Route.
Selftours offers Garden Route Tours either selfdrive tours or coach tours or if you prefer your own privately guided tour, along the Garden Route. Knysna offers various forms of accommodation to suit all pockets. You can stay in a houseboat on the lagoon, a lodge near the beach, a cabin in the forest, a Cape Cod-style mansion, a bustling hotel on the main road or one of the many guesthouses in Knysna.
Knysna town is well developed, but you still feel you’re traveling in woodcutter country. It is surrounded by a natural paradise of lush indigenous forests, tranquil lakes and golden beaches, making it a real natural wonderland for leisure and outdoor adventure.
Knysna has, for many, become the pot of gold in the center of the Garden Route. It’s famed attraction is the Eastern and Western Heads, not only for the grand sandstone cliffs, which tower above the entrance to the lagoon, but also for the many recorded shipwrecks which have met a watery grave here over the past 150 years. Yacht insurance is hard to come by when you seek to enter this port through the formidable Heads…
Visit the Knysna Elephant Park and interact with the relocated jumbo families. It’s a favourite for the youngsters. If they seek another ‘creature feature’, then whip them down to Monkeyland for a visit with some of the loveliest monkeys in Southern Africa. The Birds of Eden is a must, being the largest free flying aviary in the southern hemisphere covering over 5 acres with a kilometers of wooden board walks to see the endless species of birds
Featherbed Nature Reserve offers various ferry trips & a floating restaurant aboard their paddle cruiser.
Today this reserve pays homage to the richness of fauna and flora that Knysna has to offer with guided nature trails. Knysna is a veritable Garden of Eden and offers an unforgettable adventure not only for the young, but also the young at heart!
